Pandemic Update, Fall 2020

Where We Are Right Now—

Reaching Out, Holding On, and Feeling Very Grateful

Creativity is one of a community’s best tools for healing and growth. This year, arts nonprofits have had their revenue disrupted on every level, putting decades of hard work in jeopardy. Throughout the pandemic, incredible community support has made it possible for the MAC to adapt and meet the arts needs of our community.

For now, our gallery and shop will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You must wear a mask to enter, and we are limiting the number of people who come in the building at one time.

In Our Gallery

Folks of McClellanville, September 12-October 3

This media exhibit features Vennie Deas Moore’s unpublished work, celebrating the people of McClellanville across unincorporated lines.  Folks of McClellanville signals a departure from Deas Moore’s classic format, with past and present brought together via television screen—reflecting the transient nature of people and cultures. A podcast selection from SCETV, “Between the Waters” allows visitors to learn histories and hear stories and perspectives that are intrinsic in the photos.

Andalusia: Photographing Flannery O’Connor’s World, October 10-31

In 2017 and 2018 Nancy Marshall photographed Flannery O’Connor’s Georgia home, Andalusia, looking for the landscape as O’Connor might have seen it and translated it to her stories.  Marshall’s vision of the past transitions into the fleeting present in unframed prints. The informal presentation alludes to changes at Andalusia and to shifts of cultural perspective across the human landscape.

McClellanville Paint Pencil Ink, November 21-December 19

Your neighbors have incredible talents up their sleeves. We bet you’ll be impressed! Over 50 McClellanville artists collaborate in this exhibit of their amazing work in paint, pencil, and ink.

Woods and Creek: Recent Paintings and Prints by Aaron Baldwin recently closed in our gallery. Aaron’s virtual tour is still available online, and some of his prints are still for sale in the shop. Thanks to Aaron and Terri, Malcolm and Bootsie for a most successful show!

Also check out our virtual tour of the well-received and closed-too-soon McClellanville Quilts and Their Stories exhibit, also on our website.  The booklet (paper) version, now available as print-on-demand in our shop, features photos of the quilts, background text, and historic photos.

Check out our updated website, which offers more information about upcoming events, hours, class registration, and merchandise, including-T-shirts with designs by Aaron Baldwin and beautiful 2020 and 2021 calendars that feature some of the quilts.

Perseverance in the face of a Pandemic

Thank you to the Dorothy and Gaylord Donnelley Foundation, the South Carolina Arts Commission, and South Carolina Humanities for providing emergency funds to keep us operational. These generous contributions have enabled us to continue providing limited programming this spring and summer.

Our community-funded Kits for Kids drive distributed high-quality crafting supplies to children from the local Title 1 elementary/middle school who were cut off from art supplies during quarantine. Along with great materials, each kit came with color examples of easy crafts and a note affirming the lasting power of art while encouraging each child to embrace their power as an artist.

Our 2020 summer program offered affordable classes that employ local artists to share their skills while earning fair stipends in a time when employment is difficult to find. Summer activities have included pottery and collage classes taught by Heidi Smith and Blythe Brown’s Graffiti Camp, which resulted in a graffiti wall between the art gallery and studio. The wall features the Cape Romain lighthouses withstanding ocean waves as they have for generations, a lasting symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of art.

Work continues on a series of student-produced videos, funded by the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street, that will preserve valuable footage of our seafood culture. The first, Life on the Water, is now available online.  Look for Women of the Water and Love of the Water in Spring 2021, in conjunction with the Smithsonian’s WaterWays exhibit which will be in our gallery beginning January 23, 2021.

Changing COVID19 restrictions may alter opening dates, offerings, and maximum class sizes. Please consult our website and our Facebook and Instagram feeds and call ahead if you are planning a visit.

Art endures because it is of the people and thanks to the people, despite financial hardships and a future we can only guess at. Everyone has something to contribute! If you’d like to support the arts in the McClellanville community, please get in touch! And please continue to support the MAC financially whenever possible. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.
