The McClellanville Fleet features shrimp trawlers and their captains currently working from the McClellanville waterfront. It also includes historic images of earlier boats and captains and of the crews and dock workers who helped build the industry. The McClellanville Arts Council produced this exhibit in collaboration with the McClellanville Watermen’s Association and the McClellanville Community Foundation. It is part of an ongoing effort to preserve, record, and protect the working waterfront.

Photographer Simon Hare worked with the Watermen’s Association to photograph the current boats and their captains. The Village Museum provided historic images of shrimp trawlers, captains, crews, and the working waterfront. Photographers Vennie Deas Moore and Bernadette Humphrey shared images from the 1990s and 2000s. Graphic artist Brittany Priester designed the posters. Thanks to the McClellanville Community Foundation for sponsoring this project, and to the McClellanville Watermen’s Association for selecting MAC to document the working waterfront.

The show will open in our gallery on October 13th and run through January 15th, 2022. Gallery Hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Introduction to Natural Dyes

There are plants all around us that can yield rich, beautiful colors—once you discover their secrets! Learn how to extract color that is lightfast, permanent, and brilliant, whether it comes from onion skins, goldenrod picked from a roadside, or more exotic dyes such as indigo, cochineal, and madder root that are cultivated and traded worldwide.

Fiber artist Kristy Bishop, who taught our wildly popular class on indigo dying this summer, returns on Saturday, November 6th, to lead a three-hour workshop on natural dyes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The class will cover the fundamentals of dyeing, using mordants and afterbaths to alter the color of the dyed fabric.Participants will dye fabric samples of linen, silk, cotton gauze, and wool yarn and record the results on dye recipe cards. Then each student will create a silk/wool blend 11” x 60” scarf to take home.

The class fee is $125 for members and $145 for non-members. All materials are included. Look for more info on our website, email questions to macarts@tds.net or call us at 843-887-3157.

Pre-registration is required.  Class sizes are limited.

Art in a Time of Covid

The past eighteen months have brought daunting challenges to artists, non-profits, and community organizations, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has helped us to meet them, especially the South Carolina Arts Commission, South Carolina Humanities, the Dorothy and Gaylord Donnelley Foundation, and the Vandy Foundation.

Like everyone else, we had hoped to be operating full speed ahead by now. And, for the most part, we are. Our shop is open and full of new merchandise made by local artists; we are hosting an exciting new exhibit about the area’s historic seafood industry; and we are booking a full range of programs and exhibits for the coming year.

But if the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that all plans, including these, are subject to change. Some shows and classes have been postponed, but we are in the process of rescheduling them. So please follow us on Facebook and Instagram and check our website often. We are always adding new events, posting features on local artists, and providing updates on our shop and our programs.

And, as our annual membership drive draws near, please consider joining the MAC or raising the level of your current contribution.

Your support is more important now than ever!

Thank you to our New and Renewing 2021 Members!!

Thank You!

Chauncy Densmore and Pete Kornak for moving the old darkroom sink and installing it outside for studio use. Rick Coker for our new piano. Chip Oyler for his building repairs. Ben Duncan for his ground keeping skills. Dean Byrd for filming the Caroline Leland exhibition.

Sincerely,

The McClellanville Arts Council
