Where Everyone is an Artist

The Cigar Factory

We will kick off our exploration of working in the low country with a talk by Michele Moore, whose novel The Cigar Factory was recently shortlisted alongside Annie Proulx’s Barksins for the Langum Prize in American Historical Fiction. The Cigar Factory follows the lives of two families who work in Charleston’s famous cigar factory from the turn of the century through the end of World War II.  Many older residents of this area will remember working at the factory or hearing stories about those who did. Join us at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, to hear about how Michele did her research and watch excerpts from a video of Sounds of the Cigar Factory, which was performed as part of Piccolo Spoleto 2016 and the Pat Conroy Literary Festival and featured on SCETV’s Palmetto Scene.

Books will be available for sale and signing, and you can also get one last look at Natalie Daise’s paintings in the show Collard Green Season.
